Teeth are tough, but life is tougher: a hard bite on something unexpected, a knock during sport, years of quiet grinding at night.
Large or ageing fillings play a part too — they can leave the walls around them thin, until one day the tooth cracks under ordinary chewing. And worn, flattened edges usually creep up slowly: acid softens enamel, grinding sands it down, and the mirror only notices years later.
How we fix it
It depends on how much tooth has been lost, and we’ll show you exactly what we see before recommending anything. A small chip can often be bonded back to shape with tooth-coloured filling material, matched to your own — usually one visit.
A bigger break, a deep crack or a badly worn tooth needs more protection: a crown to hold the tooth together, or a veneer to rebuild the front surface. That’s typically two visits — one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, one to fit and fine-tune the final piece. Either way, you’ll know why we’re suggesting it before anything starts.
Keeping it fixed
A repaired tooth lasts longest when the habit that broke it changes too:
- If you grind at night, a night guard protects the repair — and every tooth around it.
- Teeth aren’t tools: opening packets and cracking nuts is how good repairs come back to us.
- Brush and clean between your teeth as usual — a crowned tooth can still decay at the gum line.
- Keep your check-ups, so we can watch the repair and catch wear while it’s still small.
