Bankmed / LA Health / Umvuzo / Platinum Health / Sasolmed and other employer schemes dental benefits, in plain language

If your medical scheme comes through your employer — Bankmed, LA Health, Umvuzo, Platinum Health, Sasolmed, or one of the many other restricted schemes — the dental picture is usually encouraging. Nearly all restricted schemes fund conservative dentistry, and many are more generous with it than the open schemes, because employer subsidies help carry the cost.

The fork to understand is how your check-ups are funded. Depending on your scheme and option, routine dentistry is paid either from scheme risk — an insured benefit that doesn't touch your own savings — or from your medical savings, where the benefit lasts only as long as the pot does. Network rules and co-payments are also set per scheme, so the same treatment can claim very differently from one employer scheme to the next.

Because each of these schemes publishes its own 2026 benefit schedule, that document is the one to get — request it from the scheme. Across all of them, pre-authorisation is the norm for bigger work like dentures, crowns, implants and orthodontics, and each scheme pays at its own dental tariff, with anything charged above it for your account.

How it works at our practice

We claim directly from medical aids. Before treatment we do a benefit check with your scheme — bring your card and your option name — so you know what your plan pays before you sit in the chair. You pay only co-payments and anything your plan doesn’t cover or has already used up. And as always: we quote before we treat.

Option by option

Worth knowing before you book

  • Risk-paid versus savings-paid makes a real difference: savings-funded check-ups stop the moment your savings run out.
  • Network and co-payment rules are set per scheme — confirm yours in the scheme's 2026 benefit schedule before booking.
  • Pre-authorisation is the rule for dentures, crowns, implants, orthodontics and hospital dentistry — unauthorised treatment is typically not paid.
  • Every scheme pays at its own dental tariff; the gap between the tariff and the account is yours, even on generous options.
